QMX multi-band multi-mode portable transceiver: qrp-labs.com/qmx In this video I demonstrate the action of the new AGC and S-meter features in firmware 1_00_017. For testing I generated an S9 30 (huge) signal using another nearby transceiver (PA disconnected, internal Synth active only). Without AGC the audio output of QMX is heavily overloaded and clips, generating distortion and some pain if ...

My design for the FDIM 2022 power challenge: to produce as much power as possible, sustained for 1 minute continuously, with a crystal controlled oscillator / power amplifier using just TWO 2N2222A transistors as the only active devices! The QDX digi-modes 4-band QRP (5W) transceiver is shockingly popular, the first batch of 500 sold out in under 15 minutes in October 2021; the second batch of 385 sold out in under 5 minutes in December 2021. Now after non-trivial re-design work to deal with component changes due to the global semiconductor crisis, we have 2,000 batch #3 available. With 6dB improved sensitivity and a new config...

I'm sad that I cam in too late to the game and missed the Palm Radio paddles
So is the QSX project on hold?
Cool and looks like at STM dev board off to the right, what is its role?
It's for programming the code into the QMX+ microcontroller, for firmware development. All the STM dev boards have an "STLink2" programmer section and I'm using that connected to QMX+ for the code downloading. My QMX+ is "unlocked" so I can program it this way. All shipped QMX+ are locked, they have a bootloader and in the firmware update mode, the QMX+ appears on the PC as a USB Flash drive and you just drag in the new file.
I just finished building my QMX+ about a month ago I bought at Hamvention last May. It went well (aside from a few swear words along the way...LOL!). I'm using a fixed 5x desk mounted magnifying glass, and I have a stereo microscope on a boom mount that can be positioned to allow work on fine detail if needed. I'm getting 3 to 5 watts output depending on the band. On to the next project: 2 QMX mini's I just ordered and received 80 - 20 and 20 - 10. It was a pleasure meeting you at Hamvention, Hans and working on these projects is a great way to escape the news circus/side show of nuttiness! Mike - ND7E
The QMX line is already extremely capable. Really lovely rigs, excellent designs, excellent value for the money. If you can work your magic and get acceptable SSB performance out of it, it will be a near unbeatable kit for QRP, dollar for dollar!
Will SSB be an add on board for existing QMX+ units or will it be an entirely new architechture? I ask because I am looking to make a purchase of one of these in the next week or so and am wondering if I should wait.
It's a firmware upgrade only, and applies to all existing QMX and QMX+. Note that the firmware for QMX and QMX+ is the same (some people missed this point).
Once you get SSB working on the QMX ill finally be able to do the 1 pound POTA challenge!
Amazing work, thanks!
I’ve never had so much fun in ham radio! Thank you Hans, thank you
Tonight at 8 UTC?
Even though it is called “tonight at 8” it was last week at 8. Check the link Hans posted for the recording.
Nice gear 😊
I really admire your simple RF lab with instruments that big companies are doing the same jobs but with big fund and same results ...
I finished my first QMX radio just days before the QMX+ announcement. I'm looking forward to seeing the new firmware. Thanks for all you do Hans.
Wow you are a busy guy, thanks all the time you use on the great projects.
I've lost track of any updates on this project, I trust it's not going to happen now? Not a complaint, just trying to clarify.
The U4B is a masterpiece. Greetings from Arizona Mike K8MB
I will buy this when SSB come ... cant wait
On sale at Friedrichshaffen this week as they were last year?
I do value and appreciate all your work.
I had been waiting for this but I want voice and winlink

Lol i love this. Might have to upgrade one of my paddles 😂
Will you make a case mkII for QMX+ with all keys displayed and knobs on the top of the case? Maybe some extra module for 4x20 LCD or internal 3x18650 basket with charger circuit.

I've been past those tombs on the boat !!!
I just finished mine, what a fabulous kit and design! A bit of a challenge with how dense the board is but it is beautiful when it all comes together.
Amazing trip to mountains boys. I really love this TA nature. You worked 10 countries over the daylight. Well how many beers you “worked” together in the evenning? 😎 73 Petr
I built my second QCX-Mini (40 meter) over the last weekend without a hitch, passed the smoke test and I didn't have to a adjust the low pass filter toroids to get maximum watts out, it was already pegging 5 watts with my 12v Bioenno battery on the Watt meter. AGC and TCXO modules installed. Now I want to build more kits :) 72 de AI5DD Joe
Just finished mine.....awesome! de VK2AOE
Very useful information, thanks! 72 de AI5DD
Thanks for this. Seems that my Rev 1 board (that I've not got round to building yet) WAS one with the PSU short. Happily, I can fix this before before it does any harm.
Will it have the AGC board installed ? I know it is an option with the QCX mini
Does this radio have AGC now?
Thank you so much for going for the through hole usb c port. Structurally weak USB ports are a personal pet peave of mine 😂
Started watching all of your videos, outstanding ingenuity. Do you test boards for the QMX the same way? Thanks for sharing. 73 de AI5DD Joe
Really outstanding. A ton of functionality for an incredibly reasonable price. Really looking forward to building my mid band kit.
This was the most complex kit I've built so far, but also had the most detailed and thorough instructions. I look forward to building another QRP Labs kit.
I just finished mine last night. I haven't tested it yet, but I applied power and it didn't let the magic smoke out so that's a win in my book. I had a moment of panic when I first powered it on and nothing happened, but I plugged it in to a PC and sure enough it showed up as a flash drive. I extracted and copied the firmware over and bam, it came to life! It's a great kit with very thorough instructions. I'll probably build another with the other bands in the future. Cheers!
Hey, I can't find it anymore but in a video I've seen you mentioned there would be a QMX 60 -> 15 and I was wondering if that'll be a thing or not? or if it's worth holding out for it? I'll be buying the 80-20 otherwise but I never plan on using 80m, 15m on the other hand is very appealing ;) Thanks for everything you're doing, and looking forward to get my hands on one of these ;) Cheers VK4ALE
Are you planning on entering the 2024 contest? If so how much power are you up to? Thanks DE KE5RJJ
Such a shame my QMX has gone missing in the post, ive been chasing it up for 2 months 😞
Can I use 9V with the 12V version?
Great stuff, I am currently studying to get my license back. I let it lapse in the early nineties. I will be ordering one of your kits once licensed again.
